The Options Menu lets you control VFEdit® operational preferences and features of your audio hardware. Use the Options Menu to:
| Indicate that the entire file should be used if you have not selected an audio segment. | |
| Control file backup during save operations | |
| Determine whether VFEdit back fills with silence during edit operations. | |
| Turn Undo/ReDo on or off. | |
| Set the location of temporary files. |
The Environment Options dialog box lets you set global defaults to fit your needs.
These settings control operational preferences that can save you time depending upon the type of editing you plan to do.
| Selection Region Default: Setting this parameter to "Whole File" tells VFEdit that if nothing is currently selected, use the whole file. This is the default setting, and is useful for most work. If you select "Ask User", then VFEdit will ask you to select an audio segment before performing any operation. | |
| Auto-backup on save: This check-box toggles automatic file backup operation on and off. When checked, VFEdit saves the original copy of the voice file as "*.BK1" whenever you save a file. You may wish to disable this feature when working with very large files, or when disk space is at a premium. | |
| Auto-extend file with silence: When editing near the end of a file, setting this parameter "on" tells VFEdit to automatically extend the file with silence. Turn this setting off if you don't want to extend so that the new audio is placed at the exact end of the existing audio. | |
| Undo/ ReDo On: Enables or disables the ability to reverse an edit step. You may wish to disable this feature when working with very large files, or when disk space is at a premium. |
These settings control the location of temporary files. Change these parameters if you are on a disk-less workstation or running from a networked drive.
| Work Files: Set the location of temporary audio edit files. | |
| Device Files: Set the location of temporary audio device files. |
The Options Device Select command lets you specify the audio device to use and controls features of your audio hardware.
VFEdit
supports Record and Playback using any Windows compatible sound board, Dialogic compatible telephony card, and even works with the PC Speaker driver. Device Select displays current sound card's basic capabilities.Note: Telephony audio products only support certain values and line combinations for record and playback sample frequencies. Some older telephony boards require use of the "digrate=" parameter in the VFEDIT.INI file. Some older boards do not support 8 bit sample sizes.
For output from the computer you have two basic "sound card" choices.
VFEdit supports many different file types and data formats. You may need to review information provided by your system vendor to determine which one is best for your particular needs.
| Data Format: Specifies the audio data format to use with the selected device. | |
| Frequency: Specifies the frequency to use with the selected device. |
Specifies the memory resource settings for the selected device. The default settings are appropriate for most installations.
| Length: Length of each audio buffer. | |
| Count :Number of audio buffers to use. |
When you select a telephone interface audio board VFEdit activates VISI's Telephone Interface Dynamic Link Library (TI/F DLL) which interfaces to the telephony audio Terminate-and-Stay-Resident (TSR) driver.
TI/F DLL is a set of programs that manage the telephony audio Terminate-and-Stay-Resident (TSR) driver and enables it to communicate with other Windows programs. If VFEdit reports an error, please see Appendix B, Configuration, for additional information.
When you select a telephone interface audio board and select "Configure" on the Options Device Select dialog box, the "System Configure" dialog enables you to set low-level the telephony audio operating parameters.
Please refer to the manufacturer's hardware manual for additional information. The default setting for these parameters should be appropriate for most installations.
| Software Interrupt: The device driver software interrupt number (in hexadecimal). Please see Appendix B, Configuration, for detailed information on setting interrupt values. The default value of zero indicates that VFEdit will search memory for the driver. The default should be appropriate for most installations. This setting is useful for debugging hardware and software interrupt conflicts. | |
| Voice Board IRQ: The telephony board hardware interrupt number(in hexadecimal). Please see Appendix B, Configuration, for detailed information on setting interrupt values. The default value of zero indicates that VFEdit will query the driver for the hardware interrupt number. The default should be appropriate for most installations. Use this setting if you have not specified the hardware interrupt when running the telephony board TSR driver | |
| Multiplexer IRQ: The telephony multiplexer board hardware interrupt number (in hexadecimal). The default value of zero indicates that VFEdit will query the driver for the hardware interrupt number. The default should be appropriate for most installations. Retained for backward compatibility. | |
| Line Number: The default setting of zero specifies that VFEdit should use the next available line. This setting is especially useful if you are running multiple VFEdit such that each instance will be associated with a separate line. Normally, you will only be running one copy of VFEdit , in which case the first available line will be line one. | |
| Mpx Input/Output sets the multiplexer input and output port numbers. Retained for backward compatibility. | |
| Max Silence/Sound parameters allow you to set automatic record termination based upon sustained input of silence or sound. | |
| Silence Compression sets the silence compression threshold. | |
| Turn the Automatic Gain Control (AGC) on or off during recording. |
Wait for Call simplifies use of VFEdit with a direct telephone line connection. Use "Wait for Call" to have VFEdit place the telephone line "on hook" and wait for a ring or loop current signal. When you call the line (or cause a loop current change), VFEdit detects the ring and establishes the connection.
The "Waiting for Call" dialog box appears while VFEdit is waiting for a call. Click "Cancel" (or press <ENTER>) to cause VFEdit to pick up the line and resume normal operation.
